Acts 1:6-14 June 25, 2020

Acts 1:6-14-Power

This is the account of Jesus' ascension into heaven. The disciples are still not understanding the meaning of the resurrection. They ask Jesus if he will "restore the kingdom to Israel."  was more of an earthly socio-political question.

Jesus brushes off the question, telling them that theirs is not to know the times God has appointed for those kinds of events. Then he commissions them in verse 5. One of my favorite verses in the Bible: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

Then he was taken up into heaven.

What strikes me and has stayed with me about this text is that it begins with Jesus' followers waiting to receive power from the Holy Spirit. It is power to be witnesses for Christ of all the had seen.

O God, fill me and fill us with the power of the spirit of the risen Christ to be faithful & fruitful witnesses for the Good News.
