Acts 7:55-60 June 5, 2020

Pastor Bruce Hedgepeth

Acts 7:55-60 Filled

These verses end the passage about the stoning of Stephen. He had finished speaking at the Jewish Council recounting for them their history of rebellion against the Lord and rejections of prophets God sent to call them to repentance. Speech culminated with Jesus, the Messiah, who they had crucified.

They didn't respond well to his speech. Even worse, the text says that Stephen filled with the Holy Spirit, saw heaven opened up and Jesus at God's right hand and he told them what he saw.

In a rage they took him out of Jerusalem and stoned him to death even as Stephen prayed for Jesus to receive his spirit and not hold the peoples' sin against them.

Passage is tragic and troubling. I wanted God, since Stephen was filled with the Spirit, to move the people's hearts and bring them to repentance. But, they were brought rage and stoning.

Lord, what would you teach me, teach us, from these troubling words. Yes-I ask to be filled with your spirit. Yes-I want to speak your truth to people, even if it is a hard truth for them to hear. Give me your wisdom to know when it is your spirit that fills me and when it is my own thoughts or emotions. Fill me, Lord.
