John 17:1-11 Eternal Life

These verses are the beginning of the long prayer that Jesus prays for his disciples during their last supper together.

The word or idea that is repeated the most in the first few verses is glory: Jesus' glory; the Father's glory; how one gives glory to the other.

But what struck me most in the middle of all the focus on glory is what Jesus prayed about eternal life.

He says that the Father gave him authority to give eternal life to those God has given. Then Jesus offers this definition of eternal life life in verse 3: "And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent."

Not the definition that would jump to my mind. I would talk about being with God in heaven, about the timeframe of eternity; about some of the qualities of eternal life that are different for life on earth here and now.

So I'm left to wrestle with Jesus' definitives knowing God and knowing Jesus. This is eternal life. Wow!
