John 20:19-23 July 13, 2020

John 20:19-23 Doors

Text follows directly after Jesus' post resurrection appearance to Mary Magdalene.

These verses are very familiar, but what captures my attention this reading is the contrast between the statement in verse 19 that on the evening of that first resurrection Sunday, the disciples were gathered together in the same room where they shared the last supper with Jesus and they had the doors of the room locked for fear of the Jews.

Then the resurrected Jesus appears in the room with them-despite the locked doors. He speaks peace to them. He breaths on them as a sign of filling them with the Holy Spirit.

And he sends them out to be his witnesses and forgive sins + out through the same doors that had been locked.

What a timely text! We have been trying to stay from pandemic and now perhaps from protest behind our doors. What does is mean for me, for us, to be sent our thru those doors with Jesus's peace.
