Psalm 8 July 20, 2020

Psalm 8 Dominion

Caption for this psalm in my Bible is "Divine Majesty and Human Dignity."

Begins with familiar words of praise to God. "O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth! Looks to nature as revelation of God's majesty.

Then the psalmist wonders about humankind-made by the Lord to be "a little lower than heavenly beings."

And then the word that interested me in Genesis 1's creation account - the Lord has given humankind dominion over the works of God's hands:the creatures on the land and in the sea.

My tendency, maybe our tendency, is to misunderstand the meaning of dominion and perhaps confuse it with dominate.

But I think the root of dominion probably Domini or Lord-as in who he looks after, cares for, seeks the best. That's the sense of dominion I get from this text and Genesis 1.
